Tutorials: Using CRYPT-PW with the RADb

Generate the Encrypted Password

To generate your encrypted password please use our online
Crypt Calculator Your password should NOT BE A DICTIONARY WORD. Encrypted passwords are vulnerable to simple dictionary attacks.

For example enter

R!A?.d%B

into the Crypt Calculator it will output the following

Your clear text password: R!A?.d%B

Your encrypted password: pfWf.67ZNXpdk

Please be sure to note as you will need the encrypted password to modify the maintainer object and the clear text password to sign your auto-dbm@radb.net object submissions. equivalent.

Setting Up the Maintainer Object to Use CRYPT-PW

Now you must modify the maintainer object to utilize the CRYPT-PW. It is likely that your current maintainer is using a MAIL-FROM auth like the following

mntner: MAINT-FRAZIER
descr: TEST Maintainer
admin-c: CFZ
tech-c: CFZ
upd-to: cfz@merit.edu
auth: MAIL-FROM cfz@merit.edu
mnt-by: MAINT-FRAZIER
changed: cfz@merit.edu 20010616
source: RADB

Now modify the auth field to support CRYPT-PW authentication. In the auth attribute specify the authentication type CRYPT-PW followed by the encrypted password that you generated using the crypt calculator.

mntner: MAINT-FRAZIER
descr: TEST Maintainer
admin-c: CFZ
tech-c: CFZ
upd-to: cfz@merit.edu
auth: CRYPT-PW pfWf.67ZNXpdk
mnt-by: MAINT-FRAZIER
changed: cfz@merit.edu 20010616
source: RADB

Finally, submit the modified maintainer object to auto-dbm@radb.net for registration. You should recieve an email acknowledgement regarding the success or failure of the modification attempt.

Using CRYPT-PW to Submit Objects

Now add objects to MAINT-FRAZIER using CRYPT-PW authentication. At the beginning of the message body place the password attribute followed by your plain text password. The password is only specified once but works to authorize any number of objects in your submission.

password: R!A?.d%B
